Faux Finish Ceramic Tile--Bold Colors
How To Header

Painted Tile

Supplies:

  • 1/4" Painter's Tape
  • Latex Paint (for Base Coat)
  • Latex Paint (for Top Coat)
  • Small, 4" Paint Roller
  • Brush

STEP ONE:
Let's start with the easy stuff:  Accumulate your supplies.  (You can get all of these supplies EXCEPT the 1/4" painter's tape at any RepcoLite store.  You can order it online here, or you can pick it up at a craft store).  Or, if you don't mind a little extra monkey work, you could buy a 1 1/2" roll of our 3M Safe Release Painter's Tape and, using a straight edge and a clean, flat surface (like a chunk of foam board), you could cut the tape into 1/4" sections that are each about 2' long.  This would be a fine length to work with as most cabinets are only about 18" above your counters.  Anyway, one way or another, accumulate those supplies.
STEP TWO:
Prep and paint your wall surface using your latex paint for the base coat.  (This color will later serve as your grout color between your tiles).  If you're painting a laminate backsplash or a ceramic tile backsplash, CLICK HERE to read the prep instructions for those surfaces .
STEP THREE:
Allow your latex paint to dry and then layout the pattern for your tile using the 1/4" tape.  (Just so you know, latex paint will dry very quickly, but it normally takes about 30 days to reach a full cure.  If you don't want to wait the thirty days to tape your wall, then you'll need to be very careful with your taping and do your best to remove the tape as soon as possible.  Or, opt to use the 3M Safe Release Painter's Tape and cut it into the 1/4" strips.  This tape is MADE for delicate surfaces like this).
STEP FOUR:
Take some time beforehand to lay out the colors and patterns of your tile layout.  If you have to, make light pencil notations in each taped-off tile square so that when you get started, you won't get confused with which color should go where.
STEP FIVE:
Set up some small paint trays--they're very cheap (under $1 a piece at RepcoLite)--with each of your colors in them.  It will go best if you also have a seperate roller and cover for each color.  Once you've got this done, carefully roll or brush each color into the squares you've reserved for it.  Go carefully since your tape edge is only 1/4" thick. You won't have tons of room for mistakes.  So go carefully and roll your colors into each of the squares.
STEP SIX:
Let the paint dry and determine if you need a second coat.  Once that's accomplished, remove the tape as quickly and carefully as possible . . . and step back and admire your handiwork!
